It all starts at 11am from the Sainsbury’s store on Philipot Path off Eltham High Street when over 50 store staff and supporters, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Greenwich, will set off to walk the 2.8 miles to Sainsbury’s Chislehurst for the Freddie Farmer Foundation. Seven-year-old Freddie will join them in his electric wheelchair.
“It will be quite something for Freddie to cover the 2.8 miles,” said mum, Deanne Farmer. “I’m so proud of him.”
Money will be raised through online sponsorship, sponsor forms and through bucket collections along the way.
Freddie said: “It’ll be a big challenge for me as I have limited movement in my upper body but I am determined and I’m confident I’ll make the finish line. My older brother Oliver on the other hand is a good runner and will try and run the distance as fast as he can – he is very fast!”
The Freddie Farmer Foundation was chosen as Sainsbury’s Eltham’s local charity for a year when shoppers voted for their favourite local cause. The Eltham store has raised over £3,000 so far through purple-themed weekends (the foundations colour), cake sales and collections in store.
Wendy Howard, human resources manager at Sainsbury’s Eltham, said: “We are very excited about supporting Freddie. The charity year is going very well and has a wonderful community feel to it. Colleagues will be bringing their families along so it should be brilliant day.”
As official partners of the 2012 Paralympics, Sainsbury’s were delighted to get Danny Crates to make the walk with Freddie.
In 2003 he took the world indoor 800m title and the European 800m indoor titles. The following year Danny set a new world outdoor record and won the gold medal at the Paralympics in Athens.
The Freddie Farmer Foundation was formed in 2011 to raise funds to set up a specialised physiotherapy centre in South-East London for children and young people with cerebral palsy and serious mobility problems. Freddie himself was born at 28 weeks with cerebral palsy, weighing just 2lb 12oz.
