ELEVEN determined youngsters from Eltham are busy preparing to take part in the Hever Castle Triathlon taking place on Saturday, September 28 and hope to raise over £1,000
for their chosen charity, the Freddie Farmer Foundation.
The Hever Castle Triathlon is the final of the Castle Triathlon Series five exciting weekend events which have taken place over the course of the summer. Very few races in the country offer such a stunning and inspirational race setting, and this year The Freddie Farmer Team will be amongst 1,200 8-15 year olds, making it the largest children’s triathlon in Europe, if not the world!
This will be their first triathlon as they hope to follow in the footsteps of the Brownlee Brothers, being inspired by London 2012 whilst trying to raise as much money as possible for the Freddie Farmer Foundation and its campaign to set up a specialised physiotherapy centre in south-east London that aims to get scores of disabled young children walking for the first time.
Proud Mum Marcia Turner from Eltham said: “I’m so proud of the boys and girls raising funds for Freddie’s fund
including my James and Daniel, they have really thrown themselves into it. Running and cycling in the parks throughout the summer and last weekend in the rain and strong winds. They went swimming in a freezing lake that I wouldn't even put my toe in! They will feel fantastic when they cross that finish line."
The 9-11 year olds have been busy having fun preparing for the triathlon where they will swim in the castle’s lake, cycle around the grounds and finish in the event village, by the castle.
The age groups make the challenge distance varied but all children will undertake either a 100m, 200m or 300m swim in the castle’s lake followed by a 4k or 8k cycle ride around the castle estate boundary and finishing with either a 1.1km, 2km or 4km run with a grandstand finish in front of the
Race Director, Brian Adcock, said: “We are totally behind this team of children and wish them all the best for the race and their fundraising targets.”
9-year-old Daniel Turner said: "If my mate Freddie could do the triathlon himself I know he would, so we'll do it for him and he'll be cheering us on. I am really nervous about the lake though!"
The Hever Castle Triathlon is part of the Markel Castle Triathlon Series which is increasingly well known for the beautiful venues and scenic grounds, held at iconic castles across Europe.
Spectators can enjoy a festival atmosphere at the event village whilst they watch the races, including archery, live bands, refreshments, hot air balloon, bouncy castle and access to the castle grounds.
